Staten Island, N.Y. 1866-67. Small cord-bound booklet, [44], [12 blank] pages. A small, but very interesting account book for the construction of a new Bake House. In the mid-19th century, the term "bake-house" was often used to mean a cooking facility in what we would a social service facility, an orphanage, home for the indigent, etc. And we believe that's what was being referred to here. Vienna; Bratislava. 1881-1891. Contemporary scrapbook (25 x 18.5 cm.), 32 leaves containing thirty-one menus, mounted rectos only. This collection of menus is mostly sourced from Vienna, in large part from the Metropole Hotel and Frohner's Hotel Imperial, but there are also four from the Palugyay Palace in Bratislava. Although the menus come from only a few hotel restaurants, there is variety of design style, with some of the menus printed.....

[Boston: winter, 1896]. Octavo-sized correspondence record book (22.5 x 15 x 8 cm.), bound volume of one hundred forty-three letters mounted on stubs. Mrs. Francis Blake, wife of the physicist and inventor of telephone fame (see DAB), gave a small ‘dancing’ party for the ‘A’ list of Boston society. Participants were to depart from the Columbus Ave. station and return to the Huntington Ave. station (1:45 AM) via private train.....

Philadelphia: 1800-1807. Nineteen manuscript cargo manifests, from the Port of Philadelphia. Various sizes, (33 x 20 cm. and smaller). An interesting collection of handwritten inspection reports, mostly from the Port of Philadelphia, but at least one from the Port of New York. Most identify the ship, master, the port of origin, dates, cargo type, weights or sizes of cargo, and the recipient, as well as marks on the cargo. From.....

A convolute of correspondence, photographs, and other materials documenting the relationship between American icon Julia Child, and Beverly Jackson, reporter, novelist, collector, and a legend of the social circles of Santa Barbara. FIRST EDITION, limited to 2000 numbered copies signed by Gissinger. An exchange in words and images between photographer Hans Gissinger and chef Marc Meneau, this book provides a sharp contrast to what is usually considered "food photography". Rochester, NY: the photographer, 1972. Small folding box (14 x 15 cm.), with two folding sheets containing text by Robert Sobieszek, and ten black and white prints. FIRST EDITION, limited, numbered 1047/4000 copies and signed by the author on the second text leaf. Internally fine; publisher’s blue folding box, with photographically illustrated title pasted-down to top panel, rubbed and slightly split at corners. Still, generally very good. [Not in Roth.....

Rochester: Humpy Press / Light Impressions, 1979. Square duodecimo, unpaginated. Illustrated with twenty-eight black and white photographs. FIRST EDITION. A photographic artist book from Les Krims, in which the artist's mother demonstrates the step-by-step method for preparing her chicken soup. The book also includes Mrs. Krims' recipes for kreplach and matzo balls. Fine in photographically illustrated wrappers.

New York: October 13, 1795. Single leaf notarized document (32.5 x 20.5 cm.), printed and manuscript text on recto only. With embossed paper seal of the notary. Sworn testimony of a Peter Adams, regarding an agreement to settle a dispute over transport of one hundred barrels of fish. [Norwich, N.Y. April 1st, 1845 – January 1st, 1855]. Small octavo (15.5.x 10.5 cm.), [74] pages with handwritten text (others blank). A neat household account book, labeled “Expenses Out for House”, covering a broad range of purchases over more than a decade. The first page, “For oysters” seems an outlier, not formatted in the manner of what follows. What follows is a detailed list of purchases, line after line listing.....

[New England?]: 1804. Cord-bound 16mo. (15.5 x 9 cm.), [18] pages. A manuscript list of breakfasts, dinners, and suppers served August 21-30. One hundred forty-nine in all, each with the name of the diner and prices affixed. Use of the word “term” seems to imply a school-related work. Brown ink in a neat hand throughout. Very good.

[l’Ain (France): circa 1870]. Large quarto (32.5 x 25 cm.), eight sheets of text and six of color drawings. There are forty-nine original watercolors and four plain drawings of mushrooms found in the department of Ain. San Francisco: [circa 1870-1938]. Convolute of various ephemeral pieces produced by San Francisco's first French restaurant, originally opened in 1849. This small archive includes menus, postcards, wine lists, business cards, and labels for various proprietary wines and liquors. More than fifty different pieces in all.
