Amy Trubek joins us at Rabelais

Monday, Aug 18, 2008 3:00 PM - 5:00 AM

Amy Trubek, author of The ' Place, A Cultural Journey into Terroir, will be speaking and signing copies of her book at Rabelais on Monday, August 18th from 3:00 to 5:00 PM. Trubek is a professor in the department of Food Sciences and Nutrition at the University of Vermont. A Taste of Place discusses the concept of terroir as it relates not just to wine but also to cuisine and culture. In stories of people farming, cooking and eating she focuses on examples such as maple syrup in Vermont and shagback hickory nuts in Wisconsin. Trubek shows why the taste of place matters now and how it can mediate between our local desires and our global reality.

Rob Evans, chef/owner of Hugo’s, will be preparing some local early potatoes to illustrate the terroir of our place here in Maine.

"The Taste of Place provides a delightful and informed read, through the stories and analysis of people and places across the country, of terroir as dynamic; possessing a European-like food ethos but adapting to the American landscape."
Michael W. Hamm, C.S. Mott Professor of Sustainable Agriculture, Michigan State University
