The Cookery Book of Lady Clark of Tillypronie.

London: Constable & Company, Ltd.; [Bradbury, Agnew & Co. Ltd.], 1909.

Thick octavo (21.8 x 15 cm.), xx, 584. Table of Contents, Index. Top edge gilt. FIRST EDITION, trade issue; and with the importer's tag tipped onto the title page, "Imported by E.P. Dutton..." and thus intended for the U.S. market. There was also a deluxe edition of twenty-five numbered copies only, on handmade paper, and with an engraved frontispiece and additional illustration. This cookbook contains a selection of recipes drawn from the recipe accumulation of Lady Clark, which she assembled and organized into some sixteen handwritten notebooks between 1841 and her death in 1897. The recipes came from well-known members of British society as well as from household servants and cooks from England and the Continent. Some came from guests in her home and thus the recipes represent the foods of Ireland, France, Italy, Switzerland, Denmark, Russia, Spain, Germany, Portugal, Holland, Austria, Turkey, and India. Clean and sound. In publisher's brown cloth, re-backed, and with the original spine panel laid-down, new endpapers; with the binder's receipt, "National Bindery Library Co." Some rubbing and bumping to corners, overall, near very good. Scarce. With an importer's ticket tipped in over the publication information on the title page, "Imported by E.P. Dutton & Company..."
