An iconic New England cookbook, published by the author five years prior to the trade publication by Barrow in 1936. The later, trade issue was re-titled Ruth Wakefield's Toll House Tried and True Recipes, and includes the author's famous recipe for the Toll House Cookie, credited by some as the first recipe for classic American treat. That original recipe (not present in this first edition) was named "Toll House Chocolate Crunch Cookies". Ruth and Kenneth Wakefield's Toll House Restaurant in Whitman, Massachusetts served hearty, home-cooked New England food. ~ Handsomely printed on laid paper. In printed red cloth, with a bit of mottling to spine, and a shallow crease to the corner of a few pages. Near very good. Scarce. [OCLC locates just six copies of the first edition; not in Bitting; Cagle incorrectly cites the 1936 trade publication as the first].
