An Alphabet for Gourmets. Illustrated by Marvin Bileck.

New York: Viking Press, 1949.

Octavo (21.5 x 15 cm.), 255 pages. Illustrated. Top edge red. Second printing. A gastronomic abecedarium (A is for eating Alone, B is for Bachelors, C is for Cautious, etc.), from the great American food writer. The author (1908-1992) writes in her subtle and very personal style of the pleasures of food and drink, and the sharing of these with friends and family... or as savored alone. The Marvin Bileck illustrations accompany initials for each chapter of this alphabet book. Ownership inscription to front fly, otherwise very good in publisher's red cloth, decorated in black and white. In an edge-worn dust jacket, still near very good overall. [Books of the Century, pages 114-15].
