A collection of recipes gathered from the pages of the popular periodical, Godey’s Lady’s Book (1830-1878), which had been the largest circulation of any periodical in America prior to the Civil War. The editor of the periodical at the time of this publication was Sarah Josepha Hale, who held that position from 1837-1877, though her degree of involvement with this publication is not known. The author, Annie S. Frost, is described “for many years a contributor to the magazine” (title page). The recipes are presented in narrative form, and reflect an aspirational cooking of an ascendant American middle class. Somewhat age-toned, and with spots and stains, but largely clean.
