This January and February, we're busy moving Rabelais from the shop in Portland to a new larger office space in Biddeford, Maine, a dozen miles away. While we get set up in the new space, we're temporarily not selling online. Once we're all organized and the boxes unpacked, we'll be up online with even more great culinary books. Thanks for your patience. And watch the site for information on our grand opening in late March or early April.

Arnold, John P.

Origins and History of Beer and Brewing, From Prehistoric Times to the Beginning of Brewing Science and Technology. A Critical Essay.

Chicago: Alumni Association of the Wahl-Henius Institute of Fermentology, 1911.

Thick quarto, 411 pages. First edition, of this first major study of the history of beer and brewing in the United States, covering the period from 1630 up until publication. The boom in industrialization in the 19th century is particularly well represented. A very scarce book. The U.S. Brewer's Association reprint uses the much shorter edition of 1933, and erroneously states that it was the first edition. Hinges a bit shaken, otherwise a very good copy.
Price: $1,500.00
