Thompson, Sir Henry.Eating and Living. Diet in Relation to Age and Activity.New York: Co-operative Book Concern, 1885.Small square octavo, 61 pages + ad. First edition. A small but important work on the value of nutrition throughout the human life span, from childhood to old age. Sir Henry Thompson, 1st Baronet, surgeon and polymath was a founder of the Cremation Society of Great Britain, and removed kidney stones from both Leopolds I & II of Belgium (successfully), and the Emperor Napolean III (less successfully). He also was a considerable gastronome, mounting elaborate dinners he called "octaves" with guests and courses each numbering eight, and both selected to promote the "feast of reason and the flow of soul." Very near fine in publisher's green board with red printed text. Quite scarce in the marketplace. [OCLC indicates 12 copies].
