High Living. Recipes from Southern Climes.

San Francisco: Paul Elder, 1904.

Preface by Edward H. Hamilton and Decorations by W.S. Wright. Squarish octavo, 58 pages. First edition of this odd community cookbook, published just two years prior to the Great Earthquake and Fire of 1906. The charming preface by Hamilton speaks of the goats living on Telegraph Hill, and the women of the Neighborhood Association who chose to tend these creatures rather than tending to "the flower bordered paths, hearing the lark sing and stringing the daisy chains." The recipes within are drawn from various warm locales around the globe and include, Salmi of Duck with Olives, Kidneys Los Angeles, Terrapin and South Park Sweetbreads. Near very good, in lightly soiled and sunfaded publisher's decorated red and green cloth boards. Still handsome.
